    The timing of this video is perfect. Only yesterday I went back to AMS2 for the first time in months specifically to try out the historic formula cars via a Quest 3 after watching another YT video about them in action. Fantastic fun however going back to GT3s afterwards was a bit of a downer :-(

    Very nice video, even if a little more on the fun side - not much new to learn here if you have been busy browsing Wikpedia and RUclips for tidbits about F1's different eras, but it provides a great overview. AMS2's representation of these different eras - especially with the additional sharpening they've gotten in the beta - is truly something you can't get out of the box anywhere else, even though you of course can get all this and more with AC's mods (but with very much varying quality). Too bad these cars are absolutely not used in online racing. I've never quite understood why there is so much trouble with them, why people don't struggle with GT3 cars but can't push a formula car even somewhat close to its limits. A 90's or 70's formula race can absolutely be a lot of fun, but finding enough people who know how to drive these cars is impossible. Much respect for delivering all these laps on Monaco of all tracks ^^

    Nice narration while I had to input ungodly amount of invoices in accounting software. Anyhow, race lap times are actually pretty similar from mid 2000 to now. 1:15 in 2006 and 1:15 in 2022. Yes, Qualy times are way faster now. In the past, I checked other tracks, like Spa, Canada,... Similar race lap times. If we went wild and threw away any regs and safety, then I think we'd have rocketships on wheels. With 2026, if engine regs stays as they are now, we'll get 5+ sec slower cars. See video: Engineering Explained: Is Formula 1 About To Get Really Slow? (You can't get around physics. Also, Nils Heusinkveld made a similar video when 50% electrification was announced, and came to the same conclusion.)

      The average sim racer can't drive open wheelers competitively, even though they might be huge Formula 1 fans. When I race with people at my level, we crash. When I race with more talented racers, I'm getting lapped pretty quickly. Box cars are a bit more forgiving.

      For me it’s the relatability of the cars. Sports car racing is imo way more intriguing for me. Also the irl races have way more overtaking and side-by-side action than F1. I don’t really like F1. For me these cars are glorified karts, not real cars.

    • @TobiwanKentobiSimracing
      @TobiwanKentobiSimracing 3 дня назад

      GT racing is quite different, position switches occur more often, the cars usually can take a lot more than formula cars, so racing can be more exciting. Aaaaannnd GT racing is also more accessable to most people in real life... sure, you still need a ton of money to compete in a GT class, but formula one is unreachable to 99,999% of motorsport drivers. Which is fine, so it's a goal for aspiring drivers to get into formula racing and especially F1. I personally prefer GT racing, but as an old F1 fan I don't deny formula racing- pretty much the same like Nils mentioned, I also was a big F1 watcher during the mid 90s to mid/end 2000s. But I have to admit that I have come to appreciate modern F1 more and more... not only because of the Neflix show (yeah, it's more drama, but still nice to watch), but those cars are real masterpieces of engineering. Let's say this: GT3 draws a lot of people because there is a lot of GT3 sim content on YT and GT3s are of course slower than F1, but faster than "tuned pimp my ride" cars like in Need For Speed or other Fast-and-Furious type of games. AMS2 does a great job to bring F1 to your sim... way better than the official game. And if you really want the real names and liveries... there are mods for that. The only thing missing of course is the diversity of the real cars, you can only plaster the "standard Reiza F1 car" with the real liveries. But I personally prefer that over the somewhat strange handling of the official F1 games.

    • @recarsion
      @recarsion 3 дня назад

      - Formula cars are just difficult to drive. GT3 is in a sweet spot where it's approachable for newcomers but there is still a high skill ceiling. - GT cars are just cool and there are much greater differences between them, yet they can all compete more or less on equal footing because of BOP. - As Nils mentions F1 is just underrepresented in hardcore sims because the F1 games themselves simply don't do a good enough job of it. - Because there are already so many people racing GT3s, that's where the most and best competition is so people who want to race online will naturally gravitate to that. - Modern F1, from what I can see, doesn't appeal as much to motorsport enthusiasts anymore. People want to drive GTs because that's where the best action is. If LMU ever gets to a point where it's a good product, I'm sure hypercars will be also very popular for the exact reason, they're the hot stuff right now. GT is also just more accessible irl. Tickets are much cheaper and GT World Challenge races are streamed live for free on RUclips. - Correct me if I'm wrong but lower formula series are actually quite popular on iRacing, idk tho because I don't play iRacing personally.

    So unless I'm misunderstanding something, why do all the tunes I've tried from coach dave run preload as low as it can go? The rear toe is set to 0.0 on most of them, so the rear end is already so lively, more so than setting the toe to .05 or .1 and running more preload. Why is one better than the other? I find more preload(not a crazy amount) and more positive rear toe easier to drive. I'm newer to sim racing and trying to get into tuning. If this isn't something you can answer briefly I understand lol. I drive the 992 if that matters.

    • @tobias2252
      @tobias2252 8 дней назад

      "I drive the 992 if that matters." It does, because the 992 already has tons of rotation. Especially off the throttle. Most paid setups prioritise rotation over drivability, which explains the settings that you mentioned. If you are looking for a different approach for the 992, Nils has created a setup and data pack for it. But just adjusting the preload and maybe give some positive toe to the rear can mitigate problematic setups to some degree. But really, get Nils' 992 pack. I think the Silverstone track is free, so you can try it out. There's a video somewhere here on the channel where it is linked.

      @SimracingPopometer 8 дней назад

      I explained the Porsche in more detail here alongside the data & setup bundle: ruclips.net/video/e6F1K8FR3J0/видео.html Also, as mentioned in the video: Preload has very little effect. We'd need the ramp angles that are unavailable for adjustment in gt3. The low preload seen in many setups helps to not get a (even) sharp(er) locking of the diff on exit giving the driver a tiny bit more time before the rear becomes more likely to snap.

    • @SimracingPopometer
      @SimracingPopometer 8 дней назад

      Degrees are fundamentally the same as percentages you see in some other sims (GPL had degrees too I think), but inverted like you pointed out and you can't know what percentage they amount to without knowing the clutch disc friction coefficient. Number of clutch discs/facings is known here of course. The scale is non-linear with adjustment getting more sensitive as you get to the smaller degrees. And really small degrees aren't mechanically feasible as the ramp would have to be super long on the clutch LSD housing.

    Please make a video on how to drive with TC 0. It seems to be about throttle control and somehow controlling the inside and outside rear tire slip, but no one tells us how we do that. Maybe you can show us how your popometer software can train us to success! I'm literally at least 2 seconds slower with TC0 because I might snap oversteer at any moment and I am way too conservative exiting turns. But I must admit it's at least twice as fun! But my ultra conservative throttling might be confounding me, according to your incredible LSD video.

    • @SimracingPopometer
      @SimracingPopometer 11 дней назад

      maybe that helps further :) ruclips.net/video/kJjDmGSjJOg/видео.html Apart from that a lot of the "secret" why it works is, and the popometer comparison to pro laps would show you: - car placement makes up 33% to be able to put the power down - 33% 'state' of the car, i.e. which tire and axle is operating how much above the limit just before you put the power down - 33% practice TC0 becomes easy once you drive the rest of the corner correctly and the car isn't challenged as much on the exit. If you want to drive without TC on corner exit, you must make it easy for the car to put the power into the ground. If you still have too much corner to do, then it won't work.

    I think that a high preload stiffens the car when turning in during braking and coasting and causes more understeer. Is this true? There is a point at about 80 Nm when the ffb feels "freer" and "springy" and not like "sand", and the car seems to more freely turn in. (on a CSL DD 8 Nm.) I have never used telemetry to analyze this "feeling". It "feels" like 80 is the max point when the stiff sandy feeling is alleviated. Is this why the meta is to set it to minimum 20? If I compare 20 Nm with 120 Nm, I can definitely "feel" a difference in FFB when braking and turning in. The 120 feels like dragging a stick through sand when turning in while anywhere from 20 to 80 Nm feels springy, and I swear the car turns in more easily with less understeer. If the "feeling" doesn't matter and you can determine that there is absolutely no difference in understeer no matter what the preload is from min to max settings during braking and coasting, it would be of great help. (I'll just set it to what "feeling" makes me happiest. lol) None of this makes sense, since a higher preload means the rear wheels can independently spin at different rates longer until higher torque locks the wheels. Which means the "sandy" feeling means the LSD is free? (I really don't like that "sandy" feeling. But feel free to tell me that "sandy" is actually better for performance. I'll be most unhappy, but thankful for the info.) Or does alleviating the sandy feeling mean the balance of wheelspin differences are optimized? Or oppositely that we want the sandy feeling? As a non-professional, I do everything for enjoyment-err I mean performance! No! feeling good and having a clean FFB is so much more enjoyable than a sandy FFB. You can tell me I'm nuts!

      I get the feeling you are correlating things that shouldnt be correlated. "sandy feeling" is not a side effect of any differential setting. That feeling only occurs if you completely overdrive the front axle and scrub the tires massively. You should never get to this point as it destroys the tire. It might occur earlier with different differential settings in theory, but the preload impact on the car is absolutely minimal and shouldnt be reflected in the FFB. So I think there's a bigger general flaw in your driving approach - even if it might interact with the differential.

    Great presentation! I was able to get tire lock and spin feedback through haptics in simhub. Strange how they don't have a volume slider for tires, eh?

      @SimracingPopometer 11 дней назад

      It's a concept and design choice thing. I agree irl you won't hear tires in the cockpit. But you feel the tire somehow, either steering wheel, or variation in g-forces. In the sim currently you are still blind in that area and sound is just a good tool to give that feedback through another sensory system. Is it unrealistic? Yeah, somewhat. But it's also unrealistic to not have the g-forces - so I think its not a good argument to make. Any sim is necessarily unrealistic, but you can make it better to drive by prodiving the same information through different "channels". I don't think that takes from realism, I'd even say it adds to realism at a justifiable compromise.

    The Hyper cars seem way too complicated for me. Prefer to just jump in and drive, don't have that much time. Sounded like you have to keep certain levels of battery power for pitting and the race finish?

    • @SimracingPopometer
      @SimracingPopometer 12 дней назад

      SOME cars are battery only in the pits and will need some charge to complete the pit stop. Other cars don't (don't ask me which). During breaking you must prevent to hit 100% charge, as that will stop the regeneration and suddenly shift your brake bias and potentially cause you to spin. Also you don't want the battery charge to be empty, cause that will immediately start burning more fuel to maintain the limited total system power and thus you might miss your efficiency target. I agree this is nothing you'd just pick up and play on your only afternoon/evening in the week.

      @@SimracingPopometer it's certainly brought a new option to SIM racing and an interesting complexity for those that have the time. I like how the GTE's and the LMP2 drive, I've not even jumped into a hyper car to try it.

      My opinion is in LMU the hypercars are nothing for the casual drivers and for me it's okay of an view of a casual driver.... Hypercars are beasty to drive and that's ok for me. I think it's a learning progress, when you can drive and 100% control of a lmp2 car than you can step little by little in the hypercars and learn how to do all this energy stuff. And as a casual driver I don't even think about to drive a 1h40min race. So I don't have to do pit stops and thinking about energy strategies and so on. But fuel in, drive 25 minutes and you are happy.

      preload, but that doesn't do much, so: you don't except with your foot

      The times might not matter, but I'd lower LSD preload to max 80 just because the turns feel more "springy" and less like dragging a stick through sand. This vid seems to imply that braking and coasting turn in isn't affected at all, but the FFB "feeling" changes a LOT. I set it to where I feel happiest, but that could mean I set it to the worst. I don't have access to the popometer telemetry. I'm inching closer to emptying my bank account to sub to his popometer, but I need to know he will train me to race with TC 0. But DOH! ACC is ded and AC Evo is soon to stomp out AC and ACC! I'll look forward to what this popometer can do with AC Evo. Ima gonna be 100% into AC Evo! Until then, Ima be in Forza Motorsports, because that's my skill level. 🥲

    • @SimracingPopometer
      @SimracingPopometer 11 дней назад

      @virtualawakening2299 you can use the tool without subbing, just wont have the additional data channels ;) and I answered to your other comment. the preload should not affect ffb! also the cars all have different ramp angles, you can't take a preload value from one car and assume it does the same on another. precision is important here. I'm not sure how far off the fast lap times you are, but you only have to worry about TC 0 when you are missing the last 1-3 tenths. ACC is gonna stay with us for a while. AC Evo will unlikely be a replacing game, looking at the content they shared so far - road cars.
